Communication Tips

If your going to be getting a trach you might want everyone in your family (you included) to learn sign language.

When you first get your trach there will be a period of time when you won't be able to talk. But you need a way to communicate with your doctor, the nurses, your family, etc.

I suggest you first learn the alphabet.

Has the American Sign Language Alphabet

http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/aslweb/browser.htm
Has a click on the word you want to learn and a video of a person doing the sign is shown and the instructions telling you what to do are printed.

Other ideas:

-Note pad and pencil.

-Dry erase board and pens. But they smell. So if smells bother you or you have asthma, I'd avoid this idea.

-Cow Bell. These are LOUD, but get everyone's attention :)

-Magna Doodle. My son had this and it works great.

Believe me when you start thinking you will come up with all sorts of things.
